12 Creative Ways to Display Your Family Photos This Holiday Season

Tips

back to blog

The holiday season is the perfect time to get creative with your decor. If you’re looking for creative ways to display family photos this holiday season, this guide offers plenty of inspiration to make your home feel warm, personal, and festive.

If you’re anything like me, you likely have family photographs hanging on the walls of your home or situated on shelves or end tables in your home year-round. But there’s just something about the holiday season that has me feeling even more sentimental about how our children have grown and changed this year, which makes it the perfect time to display our family memories front and center.

Whether you’ve had a cozy at-home session this year or you love to look back on photos from years past, I know that you’ll absolutely love including family photos in your holiday decor! I’ve come up with 12 creative ways to display your family photos this holiday season.

12 Creative Ways to Display Your Family Photos This Holiday Season

Create a Photo Garland

Using simple baker’s twine and clothespins, you can create a charming display of printed family photographs. Whether you display your family’s adventures this year or focus on snowy or winter-themed photos from years past, you can drape this simple holiday photo display along your mantle or window to add a personal touch.

Photo Ornament Keepsakes

One of my favorite ways to use family photos, particularly the shots I take of each child by themselves, is to create keepsake ornaments out of them. These are enjoyable to hang on the tree each year and look back on to remember how quickly toothless grins give way to more mature smiles!

Create Personalized Photo Stocking Tags

We’ve all seen the monogrammed stockings or the name plates that you can add to customize your family’s Christmas stockings, but consider taking a photo-related spin on this trend! Whether you opt to use or repurpose a photo ornament in this way, or you simply tie a printed photograph around the loop of your child’s stocking, this is a fun way to personalize your stocking line-up on the mantle.

Custom Photo Wrapping Paper

This is a fun idea that I think could add some humor and whimsy to your holiday! Consider ordering custom wrapping paper with each child’s face or photo printed on it to help them identify which presents are theirs under the Christmas tree.

Frame Your Family’s Christmas Card

Another simple holiday photo display idea is to frame your family’s holiday card and display it during the Christmas season. This works especially well if you include family photos in your holiday card design!

Holiday Dinner Place Settings

Help your guests feel cared for by placing a photograph of them on their dinner plate before a holiday meal. This is an enjoyable way to share recent family photos or throwback pictures from decades in the past, too!

Create a Photo Snow Globe Ornament

If the holiday season brings out your crafty side, consider purchasing a simple clear glass ornament ball from your local craft store and sliding a photograph inside. Bonus points if you include fake snowflakes or glitter!

Create a Collage

Designate a spot in your home (like the doors of your refrigerator, a hallway entry, or even a wall display like a bulletin board or a holiday card display) and use it to display Christmas cards you receive from family and friends. You can add your own holiday card or family photographs to it for a personal touch.

Swap Out Year-Round Decor

During the holiday season, consider storing the photos that you display year-round and swapping them out in favor of holiday photos or wintery memories. This is a great excuse to display adorable photos of your child as a baby in a Santa hat or posing under the lights of the Christmas tree!

Install Photo or Art Ledges

If you’ve been side-eyeing an empty wall in your home, might I suggest installing a couple of photo or art ledges? I love the look of different pieces of framed art and photographs leaning against the wall and overlapping one another, like this look from interior design bloggers Chris Loves Julia.

Plus, the beauty of opting for picture ledges, rather than a gallery wall, for instance, is that it’s easy to swap out artwork and photographs as the seasons change without leaving more holes in the wall! The holiday season is also the perfect time to drape a lightweight garland along the ledge to add a festive touch; consider using removable, no-damage Command strips to secure it in place.

Use Different Styles of Photo Frames for an Eclectic Look

Consider displaying informal Christmas morning photos in frames alongside more posed or refined family photographs. Using a variety of frame styles, colors, and textures creates a collected and heirloom look!

Create an Album

I love to set photo albums on our coffee table year-round, so why not create an album of treasured holiday memories to share each year! The joy on a child’s face as they unwrap a long-wished-for gift or the embrace shared between grandparent and grandchild make for great photographs and memories to preserve in an album.
