10 Tips for How to Capture Candid Moments in Photography

Tips

back to blog

Learning how to capture candid moments in photography is an art form that brings authenticity and life to your images. Whether you’re photographing your family’s daily routines or are a professional photographer struggling to create authenticity during your sessions, these tips will help you create natural and timeless photos that truly tell a story.

Be Ready at All Times

Candid moments happen in the blink of an eye. Keep your camera accessible—whether it’s a DSLR, mirrorless, or smartphone—so you’re always prepared to capture life as it unfolds. Being ready is the first step in mastering how to capture candid moments in photography.

Use a Versatile Lens

For candid moments, the 35mm or 24-70mm lens is your best friend. The 35mm lens (I use this one from Sigma) offers a natural perspective similar to the human eye, while the 24-70mm lens provides the flexibility to zoom in or out. Both are ideal for storytelling and capturing candid moments with ease.

Use Prompts, Not Poses

When thinking about how to capture candid moments in photography, prompts work better than traditional poses. Ask children to share a secret, have couples walk hand-in-hand, or encourage playful activities like twirling. These gentle directions bring out genuine emotions and interactions. And an extra tip? Give them the prompt…then WAIT. Sometimes the interactions AFTER the prompt are where the magic lies!

Watch for Emotion

Emotion is the heart of candid photography. Focus on laughter, connection, and quiet moments of reflection. Recognizing these moments is key to understanding how to capture candid moments in photography and create impactful images.

Anticipate the Moment

Capturing a candid photo requires being in sync with the scene. Instead of relying on the “spray and pray” shooting method, train yourself to anticipate what will happen next. Watch for patterns, subtle interactions, and key movements to click at just the right time.

Play with Angles

Angles can make or break candid photography. Try shooting from a child’s eye level, from above, or through natural frames like doorways or foliage. Unique perspectives add depth and storytelling to your images, a crucial part of how to capture candid moments in photography.

Incorporate Movement

Life is full of movement, and so is candid photography. Capture motion like a child running, a couple dancing, or the swirl of a dress. A touch of blur adds energy and authenticity to your photos. You can do this by lowering the shutter speed (and if you’re shooting manual, make sure you adjust the other settings accordingly!)

Be a Silent Observer

The best candid photos come from observing, not directing. Stay prepared and let moments unfold naturally. This approach is an essential skill for anyone wanting to master how to capture candid moments in photography.

Use Natural Light

I like to use a variety of types of natural light – whether its soft, direct, or dappled. Light can have a huge impact on storytelling in an image as well as adding an artistic touch. Darker light can create a moody feel, while direct light can emphasize a focal point in your image. I prefer the morning light while others prefer evening light or golden hour.

Focus on Details

Small details tell big stories. Capture close-ups of hands holding a favorite toy, a quick glance at a significant other, or a gentle, natural touch. These details are powerful elements in mastering how to capture candid moments in photography.
