Newborn Outfits: What your newborn should wear for your session

Tips

back to blog

Do you know what outfit your baby should wear for your newborn session? As a newborn photographer in Fort Worth, Texas my clients’ biggest struggle has been choosing what to wear. I like to make things easy, so I provide access to a styling service for all my newborn clients. But I still like to give my clients guidance on what their newborn should wear for the in-home session, because it can be a little tricky to decide.

I want you to keep it easy! They’re so little – outfits can be ill-fitting on brand new babies. That’s why I suggest that my clients skip “styling” their newborn and instead select one of these for their baby:

Onesie

Gown

Swaddle

Diaper

That’s it, you say? Yep! If you’ve seen my newborn photos, you know I like to keep it simple. No elaborate outfits and no character costumes (I’m looking at you, Baby Yoda and crocheted bear costumes!) – none of that in my sessions!

Neutral and simple is the perfect combination for your newborn baby.

Newborn Session Outfits: Onesies

Onesies are a great option for a lot of reasons. They are simple and leave the focus on your new baby. They allow those little newborn legs and feet to hang out so I can capture those sweet detail photos. And they are white! Nothing is sweeter than a baby in white and it won’t create any color casts on your baby’s skin.

My recommendations:

Colored Organics

Gerber

Newborn Session Outfits: A Gown

A knotted gown is a classic option. It keeps the outfit simple but elevated and leaves access to their little feet. The additional fabric can add interest in photos as well.

You probably know what I’m going to say – let’s keep it simple! Neutral is best (either solid color or a subtle neutral pattern to add interest). I love to get some swaddled baby photos, so having a neutral one to wrap up your newborn is a must!

EXTRAS

Diaper Covers: If you aren’t able to find white diapers for your session, I recommend having a diaper bloomers on hand. These just keep things looking a bit more polished.

Pacifiers: I am totally fine with baby having their pacifier. There are a handful of brands you can find on Amazon that photograph nicely. You can find them here, here, and here.

Bows: The most important thing to know about bows is that smaller is better! Large bows can create shadows on baby’s face.
