Style Your Family for Your Session: H&M – Fort Worth Newborn and Family Lifestyle Photographer

Tips

back to blog

You guys! You all LOVED my last blog post where I styled your entire family for your lifestyle session, so I’m doing it again! This time, I’ve chosen H&M, which is one of my favorite places to shop for my kids. They also have trendy, unique pieces for mom and dad too, and everything is at a reasonable price point.

I know how stressful it can be when choosing your outfits for your in-home newborn session or family session. My hope with this blog series is that you can see how easy it can be to put together looks for your entire family at one store and still reflect your family’s personal style. I’m super excited to share these two looks with you, so let’s jump in!

The Neutral Look

Does color make you nervous? Are you more comfortable in subdued colors? Or is your home SUPER colorful with lots of patterns and you’re nervous that your outfit will clash? Then this look is for you!

Mom

  • This blush dress is a great choice for so many reasons. It is flowy so if you are a new mom, it will be very comfortable for you to wear. The subtle pleating on the sleeves and waist line and the collared neckline offer details that will photograph nicely. It also comes in an olive green color which typically looks great on all skin tones and would also look great with the other outfits in this look.
  • Layer on a neutral, chunky cardigan if you’d like some more texture.
  • Shoes aren’t necessary for your shoot, but wear this dress again with your favorite tan booties or knee-high boots.

Dad

  • Grey is a nice neutral for photo sessions and this sweater is lightweight so Dad will be comfortable. For a more dressed up look, Dad can layer a button-down underneath.
  • Khaki-colored or tan pants can add warmth to a neutral color palette. Slim-fit look more tailored than a relaxed fit.

Son

  • H&M offers some great basics for your kiddos, and I love these thermals for boys. This is a two-pack – it comes with an ivory shirt that will be perfect for your photo session. The red one doesn’t match the neutral palette for this session look, but is a great option to have in your little boy’s closet with the holidays approaching.
  • Instead of jeans or khakis, try this pair of corduroy pants! The grey color is perfect for this session but will also match almost any top in your son’s wardrobe so he’ll get lots of wear out of these after your photo session. The corduroy will add some texture to the overall look.

Daughter

  • I will stand by this forever – animal print is a NEUTRAL! This cheetah print adds a pattern to the overall look, and the tan color warms up the color palette. And it won’t clash with anything in your home.
  • I love dresses for little girls so they can twirl! I can get some fun twirly shots with A-line style dresses – just make sure they have bloomers on underneath!

The Pop of Color Look

One thing I want you to know for your session – don’t be afraid of color! If you love to wear color, I want your photos to represent that! This look incorporates some pops of color to add some fun to your session!

Mom

  • Skirts aren’t just for summertime! I love pairing a midi-skirt with a chunky sweater. It gives a casual, effortless look to a dressier piece and I’m all about it.
  • The pink color is an unexpected pop of color and the pleating adds texture that will look so pretty in photographs.
  • I paired this skirt with a neutral sweater. Even though its a white sweater, it has lots of character – chunky texture, balloon sleeves, and textured detail on the sleeves – all details that will add interest to your photos.

Dad

  • I styled Dad by mixing a dressier piece with a more casual pieces to create an effortless look – just like I did with mom.
  • The pinstriped button-down adds a subtle pattern to the overall look. Roll the sleeves to make the look more casual and relaxed.
  • Instead of a pair of chinos, I paired the button-down with some tan joggers. This style adds a casual twist to the overall style.

Daughter

  • I want to talk about the daughter’s look first before I dive into the son’s. This patterned top coordinates with the pink from Mom’s skirt and the heart pattern is playful and adds interest. I love all the colors and think this top is super appropriate for a little girl!
  • I love pairing this navy skirt with the heart blouse. The buttons on the front add a unique detail that is super cute. Make sure she has bloomers on underneath or a pair of tights!

Son

  • I actually have this sweater for my son and its SO good. The color is pulled from the daughter’s heart patterned blouse. I want to point out here how everyone’s colors don’t MATCH – they coordinate! Tip for coordinating – if you are nervous about doing this, the easiest way to coordinate is to pull colors from other family members looks to dress each individual. However, it is NOT necessary. A healthy mix of colors (including neutrals, no clashing colors), patterns (2 is a great number to mix – think pinstripes and floral), and textures (chunky sweaters, ruffles, layering) is the key to a cohesive look.
