Do you know what outfit your baby should wear for newborn pictures?
As a newborn photographer in Fort Worth, Texas, one of the biggest questions I get is “What should my baby wear for our session?”
I know it can feel overwhelming. Newborn clothes are tiny, tricky to fit, and there are so many options. My goal is to make this part easy. Each client fills out a quick style questionnaire, and I send personalized shoppable links to help you choose pieces that photograph beautifully and feel true to your family’s style.
When it comes to your baby, I always encourage simplicity. They’re so little — and outfits can easily overwhelm their sweet features. That’s why I recommend skipping complicated clothing and instead choosing one (or a combination!) of these timeless options:
A diaper
A onesie
A gown
A swaddle

That’s it! If you’ve seen my newborn photos, you know I prefer a minimal, natural look that keeps the focus where it belongs — on your baby. No elaborate outfits or props, and definitely no character costumes (sorry, Baby Yoda and crocheted bear suits!).
Best Newborn Picture Outfits: Onesies
A simple onesie is one of my favorite choices for newborn sessions. It’s classic, comfortable, and allows those tiny hands and feet to peek out — perfect for capturing detail shots.
Neutral tones like white or cream photograph best and won’t create color casts on your baby’s skin.
A few of my go-to brands:
- Colored Organics
- Gerber

Best Newborn Picture Outfits: Gowns
A knotted gown is a beautiful, slightly elevated option that still keeps things simple. It gives you a polished look while allowing easy access to baby’s feet for those cozy, snuggly photos. The extra fabric also adds a bit of movement and texture to your images.
My recommendations:
- Lou Lou and Company
- Colored Organics

Best Newborn Picture Outfits: Swaddles
A soft, neutral swaddle is always a must-have. Whether you prefer solid colors or subtle patterns, keeping it simple helps the focus stay on your baby’s expressions and details.
My favorite swaddle brands:
- Lou Lou and Company
- Mushie

Extras That Photograph Beautifully
Diaper Covers: If you’re not using white diapers, a simple diaper cover keeps things looking clean and intentional.
Pacifiers: I’m completely fine with using pacifiers during sessions! Choose one that photographs well… you’ll find a few of my tried-and-true favorites here.
Bows: If you’re adding a bow, opt for something small and soft. Large bows can cast shadows across your baby’s face in photos.
