If you’re expecting a baby and thinking about documenting this season, you might be wondering when you should take maternity photos. It’s one of the most common questions I get from expecting moms. Most maternity sessions are best photographed between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy when you’re baby bump is beautifully defined, but you’re still feeling comfortable enough to move and enjoy the experience.
Of course, every pregnancy is different, so let’s break down why this window tends to work best.

Why 28–34 Weeks Is the Ideal Time for Maternity Photos
When deciding when to take maternity photos, the goal is to find that sweet spot where your bump is clearly visible, but you’re not feeling overly uncomfortable or close to delivery.
Around 28–34 weeks, most moms experience:
• A well-defined baby bump
• More energy than in the final weeks
• Less swelling or discomfort
• Flexibility to move and pose comfortably
This timing also gives a little buffer in case your baby decides to arrive early.

What If You’re Already Past 34 Weeks?
If you’re reading this and thinking you might be late to the game, don’t worry. I’ve photographed maternity sessions as late as 36–37 weeks, and they can still be beautiful.
The key difference is simply comfort. Toward the very end of pregnancy, many moms feel more tired or swollen, which can make a longer session less enjoyable. I always double check with my mamas during the session to make sure they’re comfortable and feeling okay. I’m a mom of two and understand how some things like sitting on the floor or turning a specific way can feel difficult! If you’re later in pregnancy, we can always keep the session relaxed and simple.
When to Book Your Maternity Session
Even though maternity photos happen around 28–34 weeks, it’s best to book your session earlier. I recommend reaching out sometime during your second trimester to secure a date on the calendar.
This gives us time to plan! We can choose the best date for your session, plan outfits, and talk through any visions you have for your photos. It also allows a window for rescheduling in case of overcast weather or illness if we need to.

Why I Love At-Home Maternity Sessions
Its really trendy to have maternity photos taken outside in golden fields of wheat, but my favorite sessions take place at home. Your home is where your baby will soon arrive, and photographing this season there adds a layer of meaning that’s hard to recreate anywhere else.
Think cozy sweaters, soft window light, and quiet moments together before life changes in the most beautiful way. These sessions feel relaxed, personal, and incredibly meaningful. Coupling your maternity session with an in-home newborn session a few months later tells the perfect story of your journey to parenthood. (I can help you create heirloom albums to create tangible memories of this time!)
